Dear National and Local friends,
We continue diving into Galatians. You have to watch it with reading scripture. Sometimes the first verse or two in a chapter seems inconsequential. However, the Word is living and every written word is powerpacked with revelation of Jesus and His love. I’m struck by “fourteen years.”
What a difference the Lord had worked in Paul those fourteen years until he went back up to Jerusalem to engage the other apostles. What a difference the Lord made through Paul in their lives. What a difference the Lord has made through Paul in your lives and ours over all the years since.
Think back for a moment to fourteen years ago in your own life—you in 2011. What difference has the Lord made in you since then. Weak as you and I are, how has He helped you become more like Him over the last fourteen years? What difference has the Lord made through you in others’ lives since then. Consider how far He has brought you. Give thanks. Receive His peace and perspective.
The Lord understands your present difficulties and how to lead you through them. Just like eveything He has led you through the last fourteen years. Just like He will lead you the next fourteen years—unless He returns to earth before then—or you return to Him.
Fourteen years ago, Come Rest was five. Kim left Von Maur and began working fulltime in the ministry with me. I was in the home stretch of writing my second book, Real Fruit. Through a series of dreams and circumstances the Lord helped me begin to unlearn old ways of institutional ministry. I began learning I no longer needed to be needed, nor affirmed, nor called by other pastors or religious organizations—to fulfull His calling upon me. Notice I said I began. I remember sitting out on our patio about fourteen years ago, feeling a little sorry for myself. Pioneering is not easy. Fortunately, His yoke is. Then He spoke to my heart, “I have called you to this long-haul ministry, as long as you don’t care who gets credit for it.” More humbling, more upbuilding. He is enough. Until He is enough, nothing else ever is.
There is a growing sense of peace and perspective meditating upon Galatians. At this present moment we hear Him say, “Fix your eyes on Me. Keep running the endurance race I have set before you.” This comes from Heb 12:1-2! Kim and I have been running our race together for almost 45 years, and the Come Rest leg of this race for almost 19. Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Keep running as He paces you. He’s right here, to make all the difference.
